Mundakki Uppukari( South Indian Bhel)[Karnataka Special Cuisine]


This is a authentic Mangalore dish.As i mentioned earlier also near my Sasural there is a very famous Temple of lord Ganesha called Annegudhe and and just near that temple a small (gudh angadhi) shop is there which is very famous for this bhel.Really very tasty Mundakki he prepares.Its a simple Bhel type but the masala used for this is little different.Once my Father-in-law showed me the method of preparing that masala.In our native we get this masala in stores too.In my house everybody just love this snack.This is too is a very good Tea time snack.

Ingredients:

  •  2 cups Mundakki(puffed rice)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomatoes
  • 1 carrot
  • 2-3 tsp fresh grated coconut(optional)
  • salt
  • 1-2 tsp Mundakki masala
  • coriander leaves
  • 1tbsp coconut oil(or any edible oil)
  • lemon juice(if needed)

Method:

Masala powder:
take a pan add 1 tsp coriander seeds ,1/2 tsp cumin seeds,5-6 whole red chilies,asafoetida,2" tamarind ,1/2 tsp salt.roast these till nice aroma comes and color changes.dry ground them into fine powder.
If you want instead of this masala you can use rasam powder or sambhar powder.

Mundakki uppukari:
If you want your Puffed rice to be very crispy then place this in oven for few minutes before adding.
Finely chop onion,tomato and coriander leaves.peel and grate carrot.
Take a mixing bowl,add puffed rice,masala powder, little salt and oil,now mix them continuously for 2 minutes.
Now in other bowl mix onion,tomatoes,carrot,coriander leaves ,coconut and mix them properly.
While serving mix puffed rice mixer and onion mixer together and if needed sprinkle lemon juice.
Serve this chatpata South Indian Bhel /Mundakki Uppukari with Tea.
